Data cubes are an essential tool for the multidimensional analysis. This means that you can structure data with a view to facilitating analysis requests. They play a crucial role in creating interactive and dynamic reports along with dashboards, enabling you to display and explore complex data sets from multiple standpoints.

This guide will facilitate the use of Cubes to create reports and dashboards and provide a global vision of accessible data.


Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure your development environment is configured correctly. You will need to activate or request the activation of certain privileges to be able to use the Cubes and their data:

  • Manage Cube Privileges: Activate authorisations.

Cubes structure

Creating a report begins with a crucial step: choosing the cube on which to run the query. This choice determines the data table to be used for the analysis.

In the application, the Analysis section allows you to create various types of report (tables, radars, histograms, etc.) based on dimensions and values.

  • A dimension is a categorisation element in a dataset, such as ‘learner’, ‘date’ or ‘institution’. String properties are represented by dimensions.

  • When the chosen dimension represents an object, for example ‘User’, the data displayed is the name of this object.

However, choosing an object as the dimension or choosing the name of the object as the dimension (‘Full name’) is not entirely equivalent in the report: 2 entities with the same name will be considered as different entities in the first case, and as the same entity in the second case.

A value, on the other hand, is a property on which calculations can be performed (sum, average, minimum, maximum, etc.). For example, the number of times a user has registered for a session is a value, because it can be added together to obtain the total number of registrations. Numerical properties are therefore represented by values.

Please note that some cubes or dimensions mentioned in this document may not be visible in the client application, as some data is linked to specific licence keys.
